FWDS Tone

Wedding photo editing that learns your Lightroom style

Tone reads the weddings you have already edited and learns what you do to a photo: exposure, contrast, the way you lift shadows, where you take the temperature. Then it edits the next wedding the same way and writes the result as Lightroom sidecars. You open the shoot in Lightroom Classic and every slider is still live.

What it does

The parts of Tone that earn their keep

  1. 01

It learns from your own catalogue

Point it at weddings you have already finished. Tone reads your Lightroom catalogue and XMP sidecars as edit pairs, the original next to what you did to it, and builds a style profile that is written into the app’s own data folder on that machine.

  2. 02

    Editable XMP, never baked pixels

Every edit is written as a sidecar against the original RAW. Nothing is flattened, nothing is re-encoded. Open the folder in Lightroom Classic and change anything you disagree with, slider by slider, exactly as if you had set it yourself.

  3. 03

A real RAW pipeline, on your machine

A native Rust engine memory-maps the RAW files, decodes on demand, and applies demosaic, as-shot white balance and camera calibration off the interface thread. A ten-thousand-photo wedding stays responsive while it works.

  4. 04

A before/after you can actually judge

Sliders preview instantly while you drag; after you stop, the engine replaces the preview with a lossless full-resolution render of both sides. Fit, 25%, 50%, a real 100%, 200%, zoom and pan all run on one shared transform, so the two halves never drift out of register.

In detail

Everything else it does

The list a working studio actually asks about on the second call.

Bringing a wedding in

  • Recursive RAW folder import: point it at the card dump and it finds everything.
  • Read-only Lightroom catalogue ingestion. Your .lrcat is never written to.
  • Reimporting the same source updates the existing wedding instead of creating a duplicate.
  • Cached local thumbnails, so a reopened wedding is on screen immediately.
  • Exercised against ten-thousand-photo wedding fixtures, not toy folders.

The edit

  • Typed Lightroom parameters: exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, temperature, tint, HSL and the tone curve.
  • Adjust anything in-app before you export. The review sliders commit real Lightroom values, not an approximation.
  • Your own hand edits are protected. An ownership marker and an exact content-hash chain stop an imported or externally modified sidecar from being overwritten.
  • One click reverts a photo to the values Tone proposed.
  • The engine reports which keys it rendered, which it approximated, and which it leaves to Lightroom-only features such as lens matching and Upright.

Getting it back to Lightroom

  • Sidecars are written photo by photo as each one finishes. The counter moves through the batch, not at the end of it.
  • Cancel at any point and everything already finished is kept.
  • Export reports new, preserved, preview-only, pending and failed outputs, and can reveal any sidecar in Finder.
  • The current Lightroom Classic metadata-refresh steps are shown in the app, so nothing is guesswork.

Your weddings, your machine

  • A private local catalogue holds each wedding as queryable project and photo tables.
  • Workspace state, the selected profile and recoverable edit revisions all survive a restart or a crash.
  • Invalid snapshots and profile registries are quarantined rather than trusted.
  • Nothing about a wedding is uploaded. The work happens on the computer in front of you.

On screen

Before it edits anything, it reads you

The screen that decides whether the rest of it is any good.

Where the style profile comes from

Point Tone at weddings you have already finished. It opens the Lightroom catalogue read-only, pairs every original with the version you delivered, and turns those pairs into a profile: the average move on each slider, and how consistently you make it. A parameter you are inconsistent about is reported as exactly that, not smoothed into a confident number. The profile is written into the app’s own data folder on that machine.

What you need

  • A Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 12 or later, or Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
  • Adobe Lightroom Classic for the round trip: Tone writes the sidecars, Lightroom renders them.
  • RAW files, or a Lightroom catalogue that points at them.

Your RAW files, your catalogue and your trained profile stay on your machine.

What FWDS Tone needs from your machine

Measured on a real install. Where a figure is reasoning rather than measurement, it says so.

Windows

Version
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit
Processor
Intel or AMD, 64-bit
Download
672 KB
Disk after install
389 MB
Admin rights
Not needed. It installs to your user folder.

Windows 7 and 8 cannot work. Chrome, which the app is built on, dropped them.

Mac

Chip
Apple silicon only: M1 or newer
Version
macOS 12 Monterey or later
Download
791 KB
Disk after install
306 MB

Intel Macs are not supported. The editing engine is built for Apple silicon and there is no Intel build of it.

Either machine

Lightroom
Adobe Lightroom Classic. Required, not optional.
Memory
8 GB minimum, 16 GB comfortable
Internet
To sign in, to update, and once every seven days. Not to edit.

Tone decides the edit; Lightroom renders it. Tone writes develop settings into your catalogue and Lightroom draws the result, so without Lightroom Classic there is nothing to show you the photographs.

The part people forget

The app is small. The cache it builds while it reads your weddings is not. This is our own folder, measured today:

Thumbnail cache
1.3 GB
Browser cache
573 MB
Sidecars written for Lightroom
3.0 MB
Projects and style profiles
2.7 MB
Total
1.9 GB

So the real answer on disk is about 400 MB for the app and a few gigabytes for what it builds. The thumbnail cache is the part that grows; it can be cleared and is rebuilt when it is needed again.

Where these came from

  • The download figures are the installer only. It fetches the app itself — about 107 MB on Windows, 123 MB on a Mac — into a temporary folder, checks it, installs it and deletes it. Nothing that size lands in your Downloads folder.
  • The memory figures are reasoning, not a tested result. The engine holds a few full-size RAW frames at once while it learns from a wedding.
  • macOS 12 is measured, from the built app. Windows 10 is the floor Chrome sets.
  • Worth knowing before you try it on an older Mac: the small installer will open one version below that, then fetch 123 MB and install an app that will not start. The floor belongs to the app, not to the installer, so trust this table rather than the installer opening.
  • Your photographs never leave your machine. The only things Tone talks to are our own sign-in and update servers.

Questions

What studios ask before they try Tone

Short answers, from the same facts as the rest of this page. Anything else, ask us, or read how the five apps fit together.

Do I still need Lightroom?

Yes. Tone needs Adobe Lightroom Classic. Tone decides the edit and writes it as XMP sidecars; Lightroom renders the photographs, and it is where you make the final call.

How does Tone learn my editing style?

Point it at weddings you have already finished. It reads your Lightroom catalogue and the XMP sidecars as pairs, the original next to what you did to it, and measures your own values: exposure, contrast, temperature and tint, HSL and the tone curve. That style profile is kept on your computer. The catalogue is only read, never written to.

Will it overwrite edits I made by hand?

No. Tone marks every sidecar it writes and checks it before writing again, so a sidecar you edited yourself, or one that came from somewhere else, is left alone. One click puts a photo back to the values Tone proposed.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Your RAW files, your catalogue and your style profile stay on your computer. The only things Tone talks to are our own sign-in and update servers.

Which computers does it run on?

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, or a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 12 or later. Intel Macs are not supported. 8 GB of memory is the minimum and 16 GB is comfortable.

Is there a free trial of FWDS Tone?

Yes. The 10-day trial runs on the full app. No watermarks, no crippled export. It runs on one computer. No card is needed.
